Unity EURO Cup 2025

The Malta Football Association’s Football Social Responsibility (FSR) department proudly represented the island on the European stage at the fourth edition of the Unity EURO Cup. Co-organized by UEFA and the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), the special tournament was hosted at the prestigious KNVB Campus, the headquarters of the Royal Netherlands Football Association, in Zeist.

The Unity EURO Cup is a powerful initiative designed to highlight the transformative power of sport, specifically focusing on the social inclusion and integration of refugees into their host communities.

A Celebration of Diversity and Inclusion

The tournament featured 18 mixed-gender teams from across Europe. In line with the competition’s ethos of solidarity, Malta’s seven-a-side squad was a beautifully diverse blend of players:

  • Seven refugee players who have resettled in Malta.
  • Four players from the local host community, ensuring local and international representation.

The tournament kicked off with an institutional forum discussing how football federations can further aid displaced individuals, followed by an intense and emotional matchday. While Finland ultimately clinched the 2025 title in a thrilling penalty shootout against Armenia, the true triumph for the Maltese contingent lay far beyond the scorelines.

Driving Social Change
By taking part in the matches in Zeist, the Malta FA FSR department underscored its ongoing commitment to UEFA’s Football Sustainability Strategy 2030. The event provided Malta’s players with an unforgettable international platform to showcase their talents, share their unique stories, and build lifelong friendships.
